Whether you’re an automotive sports enthusiast or a curious investor wondering about the McLaren Group IPO status, this guide is for you! Let’s dive in for more information about the company’s financial profile!

What Does McLaren Group Do?

McLaren Group is a British car manufacturer specialising in building luxury automobiles and supercars.

The company was founded in the early 1980s when Ron Dennis acquired the McLaren Formula One team

McLaren Group is also the holding company for various subsidiaries, including McLaren Racing, McLaren Applied (which specialises in technology and data), and McLaren Automotive.

However, each one of these subsidiaries is a standalone entity with its own employees, directors, and investors.

Despite McLaren Group’s diverse portfolio, it still makes most of its money from selling its wide range of high-end motorsport and supercars, with over 100 dealerships around the globe.

Who Owns McLaren Group?

After Ron Dennis acquired the Mclaren F1 team, the company went through a series of share acquisitions that shifted the ownership of the group.

Currently, the majority shareholder of McLaren Group is the Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, which the royal family of the Bahrain Kingdom owns. The sovereign wealth fund owns 56.4% of the company.

Besides Mumtalakat, McLaren Group’s largest shareholders include:

  • TAG Group Limited (14.32%)
  • Nidala (BVI) Ltd.(9.84%)
  • Favorita Ltd. (5.78%)
  • Perlman Investments Ltd. (5.77%)
  • McKal Holdings (5.24%)
  • Acanitt Ltd.(2.65%)

McLaren Group IPO Outlook

Although many competitors of McLaren Group are publicly listed, including Ferrari and Aston Martin, the British company is yet to make this critical move.

In 2021, the Financial Times announced that McLaren is planning to raise £500 million ($620 million) from a deal with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), which would have allowed the private company to go public.

As things stand, the deal didn’t go through and the company isn’t publicly listed to this day.

However, in June 2022, Mumtalakat’s CEO said that McLaren would be ready for an IPO within 2 to 3 years. In other words, while McLaren Group isn’t public yet, this should change in the upcoming years.

McLaren Group Funding Rounds

McLaren Group has completed 4 funding rounds, which allowed it to raise £548.8 million (around $681.4 million).

The earliest funding round was led by Nidala company, which raised £203.8 million (around 253.1 in May 2018. The latest one was a venture round in March 2023, which raised £70 (around $87 million).

What Is the Estimated Value of McLaren Group?

McLaren Group lists some financial data on its website, including the group's liquidity and net debt, which are currently £87 million and £521 million, respectively. However, the company doesn’t include information about its current valuation.

According to a report by Reuters, McLaren Group was valued at £560 million (around $695.1 million) by the end of 2020.

Yet, a report by The Race predicts that McLaren’s value will be in the billion in the upcoming years.
